3 oz (75g) Mortons Plain Flour
3 0z (75g) Butter
3 oz (75g) Soft Light Brown Sugar
1 Egg (Beaten)
1 tsp Vanilla Essence
1/4 tsp Salt
2 oz (50g) Chopped Dates
2 oz (50g) Chopped Blanched Almonds

Pre-heat the oven to 160 C/ 325F/ Gas Mark 3.
Lightly grease and line an 18cm/ 9in square tin with greaseproof paper.
Combine the butter and sugar in a heavy bottomed saucepan and heat gently until all the sugar has dissolved, stirring occasionally. Remove from the heat, cool slightly, then blend in the egg and vanilla essence.
Sift the flour, baking powder and salt into a bowl. add in the dates to coat in the flour.
Stir the flour mix into the pan with the almonds and mix well. Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and bake for 20 – 30 minutes.
Cool in the tin and when cold, cut into about 20 squares.
